Yesterday morning as I was reading the newspaper, I found an article for a small festival not too far away from where I live, but what really caught my attention was that the article said "Michigan Lavender Festival".... Lavender in Michigan?!?!?! well yes! there are lavender fields in Michigan and not too far away from my house there is one!.... or so I thought.
I started my journey yesterday after reading the newspaper and having my religious morning coffee, followed by an extensive search for this lavander fields in Michigan. To my surprise there is one really large at the Leelanau Peninsula off the coast of Lake Michigan. I got in contact with them via email, and they were really nice and helpful. Unfortunately they are already harvesting and not much to see anymore, but I'll sure be there next year to take good pictures for my new works "Michigan Lavender Fields".
Anyways, the newspaper talked about the one right here, not too far away from me. So I kept searching and found it! All this exhitement about the lavender fields, gave me enough inspiration to pull out some of my own pictures from Provence and paint this small lavender field with vineyards in the back. So after finishing the painting early this afternoon I decided to draw the map and start my lavender adventure with my husband, my little one (my 4 year old son) and my camera. The "lavender field" here ended up not being a field, but the owner of a small farm who has a few plants of different varieties of lavender. I can not tell you that even though is a small garden, the aroma is unbelievable!
So, from the news, the inspiration and the memories of that great scent of fresh lavender came up this little oil painting.
Enjoy!

I read with interest your report on visiting a lavender 'field'. May I invite you to the largest lavender farm in the midwest.......in Northern Michigan. Lavender Hill Farms is located at 07354 Horton Bay Road, Boyne City, MI. We are on the 45th parallel, the same as Provence! Owners, Linda and Roy Longworth, have 4000 plants in several fields, with 15 varieties. Best time for viewing is in July. As we have been busy planting and developing our business, we do not as yet have a website. (Expected in May2008) For reference, you may contact Andy Norman, MSU Extension in Traverse City for information. Over 50 artists visited the farm this past year to paint, sketch and photograph. We hope you will include us on your lavender tour.
Regards, Linda Longworth
